So I have some funny news. Over the past week I have gotten some random calls about job opportunities with various companies. The first was with one of an old recruitment company that I was using in the fall. They called me to see if I was available to talk about a new job opportunity. These jobs are usually entry level contact jobs, so I wasn’t too keen on this one. But nonetheless, it’s cool to see that I am still on the radar.
Then I got a call from a “management recruitment” head hunter. Basically he was calling to tell me about a possible account executive / account management role with a promotions agency. This promotions marketing firm is apparently Canadian and is focusing on packaged goods in North America. Sound familiar? Yep, sounds like a direct competitor to my company. Heh. I talked to him about it and he still made it sound like I needed him, but honestly this job didn’t sound worth the hassle to move. He wanted me to send over my resume, but I decided not to since I knew nothing much about the job. Why would I want to move to a job similar to what I’m doing right now? I’m sure it would be the same work and same type of pay. For what’s it’s worth, the job I have right now it pretty good w/great people, and the only major issue I have are the hours, stress and the fact that I’m not working for social causes.
Here’s the kicker. I also got a call from a global advertising company that I had interviewed with in late January, and at the time they told me that they were 99% about to hire someone already; I was just a bit to late contacting them (see January 19 post). They gave me the cliché “but you are still an impressive candidate / we will definitely keep your resume on file” speech back then and I just took it like I usually did. This time it was different because they actually called me back!
It was a total surprise to me and it seems that 5 months later they’re looking for another person. There were 2 or 3 candidates from the last round that stood out, and were calling to see what we were up to these days. I told them about where I was these days and my job, and he seemed impressed. I’m now going into an interview this Friday (July 23)! I updated my resume and have to look around for some writing samples to send them for review.
To refresh your memory, this job would be in a new Social Marketing Group, focusing on developing marketing campaigns for non-profit organizations / NGOs / companies focusing on charitable programs (e.g. AIDS walks). Sounds totally up my alley eh? Yep!
So what can I say? I’m in a total bind. I’m just starting to get into the groove with my current job, gaining some great experience and working in a great environment. The people are great (how many people can smoke up with the president of the company, or partake in a “Lobster Fest”, importing lobster from NB via same day flight delivery?). So we’ll see. Sure, this is in Social Marketing, but if the culture is dry and uptight, I’ll be miserable. On the other hand, I could be working on such things as a UNICEF marketing campaign in Brazil, or with UNESCO!
I’ll at least go into the interview and see how my gut takes me. That’s really all that I have to go on right now. Until then, I need to find some good material that helps showcase my writing ability! J
Take care,
RE
